Solo Exhibition at Material Art Space in Memphis, TN. July 5 – 27, 2013

These images were captured looking into separate water basins found in a small cemetery in Berlin. The different layers of imagery in each basin create a new perspective of the outside environment that exist only in the reflection. A vacuum existence but existence nonetheless.

Advaita is Sanskrit for “non-duality”. These installations use two turned wood bowls that are sandblasted (one is burnt).  The video in the installation is of the burnt bowl while in the process of burning and is played backwards in reverse. The opposing states of the bowls is enough to speak about dualities but the sounds and appearance of the dancing smoke add an element of the mystical or alchemical process used by shamans and other liminal characters throughout human history that added to the relationship between humans and nature as well as the confrontation of the unknown in the universe.

The use of discarded wood to construct objects that are symbolic of death create a paradoxical outlook of the cyclical nature of birth/death.
